The Magic of Cuir Bouilli’ by the Invisible Party
“Through ‘The Magic of Cuir Bouilli,’ we aim to transcend time and captivate audiences with the enduring allure of ancient craftsmanship, seamlessly woven into the fabric of contemporary design.” Vivian van Schagen, Founder & Creative Director of The Invisible Party.
Amsterdam-based design powerhouse The Invisible Party has woven contemporary design seamlessly with ancient artistry in their latest exhibition, “The Magic of Cuir Bouilli,” currently enchanting visitors at the esteemed shoe and leather-industry museum, Schoenenkwartier. Central to the exhibition is a dynamic display reminiscent of a catwalk, comprising an array of plinths and platforms of varying volumes and shapes. Crafted by The Invisible Party, this undulating composition seamlessly melds artefacts spanning the ages, eschewing traditional chronological curation.
Instead, the exhibition unfolds harmoniously across three thematic categories: craft, design, and fashion. This deliberate presentation, devoid of detailed information next to objects, aims to heighten the visitor’s experience, minimising intellectualisation and inviting them to lose themselves in craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from the forms, materials, and colours on display.
“The Magic of Cuir Bouilli,” now gracing Schoenenkwartier and designed by The Invisible Party, offers a mesmerising journey through the annals of time, shedding light on a craft that has endured through the ages and inspiring artists and enthusiasts alike.
A contemporary light purple palette is a striking counterpoint to the historical, dark tones and sturdy materials. At the same time, reflections from disco balls and glossy elements such as glass display cabinets amplify this medium’s enchanting and magical essence.
The Invisible Party’s bespoke graphic language, inspired by the molecular transformation of leather during the Cuir Bouilli process, permeates the exhibition, weaving together overarching narratives of craft, design, and fashion, infusing an air of playfulness and whimsy.
Stretching along one side of the exhibit, a unique timeline unfolds in 55 prints, each reflecting a Cuir Bouilli masterpiece on display. Bold graphic illustrations accompany detailed information regarding the history, materials, and artisans or designers involved, providing enthusiasts with a comprehensive exploration of the craft’s evolution, from mediaeval body armour to haute couture by McQueen. Vivian van Schagen, Founder and Creative Director of The Invisible Party, shares her vision: “We believe in creating museum spaces that are visually stunning, educational, and thought-provoking, fostering a connection between art, history, and the viewer. We aim to celebrate creativity, making it accessible and engaging for all.”
