After the destructive 2018 Woolsey Fire in Agoura Hills, California, Ridgeline Residence emerged as a symbol of resilience and exceptional design. Created by (fer) Studio, this contemporary home revitalises its surroundings and blends seamlessly with nature. Positioned thoughtfully on the land, it demonstrates how architecture can turn challenges into inspiring new beginnings.

A devastating fire sparked by the 2018 Woolsey Fire reduced a residence in Agoura Hills, California, to ashes. Yet, a stunning contemporary home, Ridgeline Residence, arose from the ruins. This breathtaking dwelling, designed by (fer) Studio, breathes new life into the 28,270-square-foot site, showcasing the perfect blend of innovative design and harmonious coexistence with nature.

Situated at 29078 Crest Dr, Agoura Hills, CA 91301, the 2,557-square-foot abode is a masterclass in adaptive reuse. The design process began with a physical model, leading to the development of various program area block studies. This meticulous approach ensured the clients’ needs were expertly woven into the fabric of the building. An 18-foot concrete block retaining wall, a remnant of the previous structure, became a crucial organising element, inspiring a roof design reminiscent of an abstracted mountain ridge line.

The semi-two-story linear floor plan follows the site’s natural grade edge contours, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. A large exterior arrival courtyard, partially covered rear patio, pool patio, workout/guest room, and 2nd-floor master bedroom deck area all blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Roof overhangs cleverly hug and shroud exterior rooms, fostering a personalised interconnected ecosystem between the clients and their dream home.

The project aims to create a contemporary home that utilises the existing site conditions and limitations after the 2018 Woolsey Fire destroyed the previous residence.

Completed on January 1, 2023, this remarkable project stands as a testament to the power of innovative design and collaboration. Joshua White’s stunning photography captures the essence of this remarkable dwelling, where interior and exterior spaces meld together in perfect harmony. Ridgeline Residence is a shining example of how tragedy can be transformed into triumph, offering a glimpse into the future of contemporary home design.
