The ultimate art of interior design is balancing aesthetics and practicality, creating rooms that are both attractive and functional for the people who live in them. Arc of Elegance, located in Mumbai and created by Preetu Mulay of Pree D’Fine, reflects this ideology. This 2,300-sq.ft project is more than simply a home; it is a meticulously constructed setting that reflects the lifestyle and aspirations of its owners—a young couple with two daughters who desired a stylish and practical home with a touch of simple luxury.
Pree D’Fine designed a home that mixed elegance, comfort, and functionality. Not picking up blatantly sparkling features and using toned-down materials instead adds subtle glitter without overloading the senses. For example, patina-finished brass pieces were employed, adding a touch of elegance without the garishness commonly associated with shining brass.
One of the most notable aspects of Arc of Elegance is its excellent utilisation of space. Preetu chose to include curving walls instead of rectangular ones, which transformed what may have been monotonous, tunnel-like hallways into exciting pathways that connect to larger rooms. This architectural approach is visible in the entrance hallway, where the curvature of the walls provides a sense of anticipation, directing visitors to the more open portions of the house. Similarly, the spacious powder bathroom has a curving wall to break up the area and make it feel more intimate than a standard bathroom. Including a bench greatly improves the room’s utility, making it a space where one can walk around comfortably.
Arc of Elegance is a residence meant to bring families together. The kitchen, with its breakfast counter that includes a hot plate and sink, where the family gathers every morning, is a private space facilitating the homeowners to begin their day together. Similarly, the hobby room is intended for the entire family to gather and enjoy board games or other activities. Interestingly, the living room, typically the heart of a home, is not the focal point here. It lacks a television, highlighting the family’s desire to spend time in more participatory and stimulating situations at home. These choices indicate a deliberate effort to encourage great family time.
The development of Arc of Elegance was a journey of change, where an ordinary builder flat was transformed into a sophisticated refuge. The initial structure, plagued by poor execution, necessitated a total redesign. The essential beauty of this design is found in its simplicity and intelligent material selection. The design centres on a magnificent stone that runs throughout the residence. With its beautiful veins and subtle drama, this marble establishes the tone, allowing the remainder of the space to be stunningly simple.
