Since its humble origins 150 years ago, denim fabric has grown to become a valued wardrobe essential. The so-called ‘Genoa cloth’ arrived in the United States from Italy, where it was made into jeans by tailor Jacob Davis and trademarked by Levi Strauss in 1873. Jeans remain one of the most enduring icons of the American myth. Yves Saint Laurent once admitted, “I wish/had invented blue jeans.” They have expressiveness, modesty, and simplicity, all of which I aspire for in my clothing.
Denim, which has always rightfully claimed to be a stylish fundamental, is currently top-trending again, having been on all of the latest catwalk shows, from ready-to-wear to haute couture, as well as in accessory collections. Poltrona Frau capitalises on and reinterprets this trend in the furniture industry, introducing the characteristic slubbed texture and contrasting topstitching to one of its exquisite and, consequently, ageless armchairs.
The folds and generous proportions of Archibald, a modern-day classic, are wonderfully clothed with this new denim jacquard fabric in organic cotton, where the trademark diagonal twill is given a unique wash to make it even more durable and appropriate for upholstery. This aptly titled Ever-Denim fabric, in deep premium indigo, has a slub weave that gives it a distinct visual and tactile three-dimensional look, with the worn-in feel of cherished stone-washed jeans. The organic cotton is GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) and dry cleanable.
The multiple rows of topstitching on the cushioned contours, as well as the chair base’s new ‘old bronze’ finish, inspired by the rivets and metal hardware seen on jeans, give authenticity. The Archibald armchair also features a camel-coloured Cuoio Saddle leather label imprinted with the ‘Archibald Denim Edition’. A unique ‘like you’ logo is applied to the back.
