Marble Centre International’s (MCI) A Shared Memory reimagines marble creativity by capturing the essence of Bengaluru’s cityscape via magnificent patterns, shifting light, and shadows, amidst cultural complexity.
Marble Centre International (MCI), a natural stone industry leader, released A Shared Memory, an artwork that pushes the boundaries of marble as a medium of artistic expression. The installation, made of stunning Rosso Colamandina stone, celebrates Bengaluru’s architectural heritage and ever-changing cityscape.
A Shared Memory, inspired by the city’s minute yet defining features, takes viewers on a sensory journey to capture the essence of Bengaluru. The rain-soaked trees, ornate latticed jaali windows, and the city’s unique architectural peculiarities make up the heart of this fascinating work. The interplay of Rosso Colamandina’s rich, earthy patterns with shifting light and shadows creates a story that is both transient and timeless. The project encourages viewers to pause and ponder, reuniting them with the ever-present, unnoticed details that shape the city’s character.
The architects of A Shared Memory approached the design intending to challenge traditional perceptions of marble. Marble, long associated with permanence and weight, was reinterpreted as a media capable of portraying movement, lightness, and volatility. The installation includes a highly carved façade installed on a rotating base, an inventive element that transforms the stone into a constantly changing canvas. This dynamic method emphasises how materials grow and interact with their surroundings, resulting in a dialogue of light, shadow, and pattern.
The earthy richness of Rosso Colamandina was the ideal platform for my inquiry. Its elaborate patterns and tonal fluctuations enabled the architects to replicate natural phenomena such as sunlight flowing through dew-laden greenery and the delicate tracery of jaali screens. This meticulous design pays attention to the little nuances that characterise Bengaluru’s character, resulting in an installation that feels both timeless and active, much like the city itself.
A Shared Memory honours Bengaluru’s legacy while also establishing marble as a versatile medium of contemporary design. It exemplifies how smart design can bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, conveying a story as timeless as the stone from which it was created.
A Shared Memory’s ability to shift perceptions and stimulate introspection serves as a powerful reminder that the deepest beauty can be discovered in ever-present, unnoticed details that surround us. This project conveys Bengaluru’s character in a novel and highly resonant way, courtesy of a unique confluence between material knowledge and architectural vision.
