Gio Ponti’s signature style is honoured in the limited edition Dezza armchair, featuring unique hand-patterned designs.

The Dezza armchair holds an important role in Poltrona Frau’s history. Gio Ponti designed it in 1965, and it was the first product to showcase the brand’s new orientation when the firm relocated to Tolentino in 1962, where it is still housed today.

The seat’s distinctive modernist and squared lines are delicately balanced by elegantly curved armrests that shape the entire profile of the armchair down to the feet, giving the design a sense of momentum and dynamic. Dezza, one of Poltrona Frau’s most popular recliners, has been in production since its debut. To commemorate its 60th anniversary, Poltrona Frau reintroduces the style in a limited edition of only 60 numbered and certified pieces.

The Dezza Limited Edition armchair is upholstered in Pelle Frau® ColorSphere Impact Less, which aligns with the brand’s commitment to sustainability—an essential effort launched in 2022.

The delicate tones of Panna and Iris reflect Gio Ponti’s light, happy interiors for the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento, which also include the master’s signature white and blue majolica floors. However, the most distinguishing feature of this re-edition is the upholstery pattern: a replica of a previously unpublished illustration by Gio Ponti, purchased at auction by a private individual and chosen by Poltrona Frau after extensive investigation. The eye-catching pattern comprises 26 stylised hands*, each distinctively designed with its name and identity, such as ‘the gloved hand’, ‘the starry hand’, ‘pierced hand’, and ‘the fortune teller’s hand’, among others.

Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was one of the most significant architects and designers of the Italian postwar period. Ponti was a diverse and imaginative creative force whose early work was influenced by Art Deco and classical styles before evolving to embrace Rationalism and the Modern Movement. His accomplishments ranged from architecture to interior design for private residences, hotels, ocean ships, and ceramics. Ponti was a prolific designer in a variety of industries, including theatre sets, lights, chairs, textiles, and kitchenware. He also had an important part in establishing the Compasso d’Oro, which is still one of the most prominent global design prizes today. Among his many accomplishments, he designed the iconic Pirelli tower, which is one of Milan’s most recognisable emblems.

From February 13th until April 1st, a limited quantity of pieces will be offered as online exclusives on Poltrona Frau e-shops in specific European countries; thereafter, the model will be accessible at select Poltrona Frau stores globally. Each piece is individually numbered and identifiable with a metal tag attached to the armchair’s back, as well as a signed certificate of authenticity.

Nicola Coropulis, CEO of Poltrona Fra, shares, “We are thrilled to present this historic piece from our catalogue in a new guise. Designed exclusively for us by Gio Ponti sixty years ago, it has retained its timeless modernity. With our re-editions, we always try to create and deepen the cultural significance of the original design, offering something truly exclusive that not only enhances the materials and finishes but, above all, celebrates the creative process behind the products.”
