Kumpal Vaid, the founder of Purple Backyard, is an architect whose projects masterfully mix tradition and modernity, drawing on India’s rich cultural past. Kumpal was raised in Mumbai and pursued his interest in design at the Rachana Sansad School of Interior Design before continuing his education at Central Saint Martins in London. Her creations, inspired by her mother and grandmother, highlight the beauty of Indian craftsmanship and art while mixing history with modern aesthetics.
The design concept, based on “immersive simplicity,” is reflected in her most recent building, Apartment O2, a family home created to capture warmth, vitality, and unity. Tailored to a family of four, the space reflects the inhabitants’ varied lifestyles and artistic hobbies, providing a haven for connection and delight. “We wanted the home to embody a sense of liveliness as essential as oxygen—a truly happy home,” Kumpal tells me.
Apartment O2’s interiors are a beautiful blend of soft, raw cotton hues, marble accents and quirky handmade textures. The open areas are intended to breathe, utilising natural airflow while reducing the risk of mould in Mumbai’s coastal environment. Individual personalities are reflected in the children’s rooms, which are decorated with lively colours and textures that exude youthful charm. Veneered shutters and a warm dining unit add a timeless, beautiful touch, while acrylic and glass elements bring a modern, fresh atmosphere.
Kumpal’s intelligent design ensures sustainability, with an open plan that incorporates natural features and promotes a relaxing atmosphere. The living rooms are designed to foster family bonding, with areas that promote play, creativity, and togetherness. “We wanted a home that flows with harmony and ease,” she told me. Apartment O2 is so much more than just a home; it is a delightful tapestry of family life, where elegance meets playfulness, resulting in enduring experiences for everyone who lives there.
