Aram, the residence of Manish Dikshit, Principal Architect at Aum Architects, exemplifies balance in design, function, and personal expression. This 1,350-square-foot Mumbai home, named after the Tamil word for “not too good, not too bad,” embodies balance, ensuring every element resonates with its inhabitants and visitors. Aram is an immersive experience that expertly juxtaposes materials, colours, and textures to create layered narratives that unfold on both spatial and detailed levels.
Nestled within Mumbai’s bustling urban landscape, Aram’s Haussmann-inspired interiors, commonly found in European architecture, provide a striking contrast. Classical design elements blend naturally with modern necessities, creating an elegant and functional home. Personal artefacts collected during the residents’ travels are thoughtfully incorporated into the décor, infusing the space with intimate stories and nostalgia.
The entrance foyer, with traditional chequered flooring and ornate doorways, sets a neoclassical tone. It leads into a living room with muted tones punctuated by vibrant bursts of colour. A striking mango-yellow glass table stands out among the subdued seating, and a Parisian-themed nook adds an unexpected visual delight. Wall mouldings, intricate carvings, and carefully curated furnishings contribute to the layered look.
The open floor plan allows the dining and kitchen areas to flow coherently, making them the heart of the home. A 150-year-old cast iron pillar from Calcutta stands between the living and kitchen areas, providing a historical contrast to the kitchen’s sleek modernity.
