Architectural serenity a reverent ode to Buddhism at the hotel in Bodh Gaya

Every space within the Hotel in Bodh Gaya embodies the core tenets of Buddhism through two architectural elements- memory and emotion.

The Hotel in Bodh Gaya, designed by SJK architects, strives to maintain a human scale by emphasising the proportions of courtyards, verandahs, arches, and windows. The colour palette of muted whites and warm terracotta further enhances the emotional resonance within the space.

The hotel’s landscaping, including a river-like water body adorned with floating lotus plants (a symbol of purity in Buddhism), fosters a sense of calm and tranquillity. Flanked by ceremonial steps resembling a riverbank, this water body provides visitors a space to rest and rejuvenate outdoors.

Buddhist philosophy and symbolism are integral to the hotel’s interiors, artwork, and signage, simplifying navigation while instilling a deeper connection to Buddhism. The five wisdoms associated with Buddhism, depicted in the Vajradhatu Mandala, are reflected in the five public spaces, each representing a unique aspect of Buddhism.

For instance, the spa-gym-pool area, symbolising’ oneness with the earth,’ is adorned with blue motifs reminiscent of winter and the vajra symbol. These design elements create a rich sensory experience while guiding visitors through the hotel.

The architects grappled with the allure of traditional brick construction, a staple in Bodh Gaya’s local architecture. However, the local soil’s poor bearing capacity and seismic concerns led them to opt for Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks, which offer better insulation and long-term cost savings. The Hotel in Bodh Gaya combines RCC, local brick, and AAC blocks for its structure, using terracotta-tinted concrete for the vaults, skilfully merging tradition with modernity.

Several passive design strategies have been integrated into the Hotel in Bodh Gaya to reduce energy consumption and create a thermally comfortable environment. The orientation of residential blocks minimise heat gain, and the use of aerated concrete blocks, double-glazed windows, and a double roof system ensures efficient insulation.

Courtyards and natural ventilation are leveraged to reduce the need for air conditioning, while water bodies on the site aid in evaporative cooling. The hotel’s water management system exemplifies mindfulness and conscious water consumption by collecting rainwater, promoting natural filtration, and minimising the risk of flooding.

In a harmonious fusion of design, spirituality, and sustainability, the Hotel in Bodh Gaya stands as a testament to the enduring significance of Buddhism and its impact on the architectural landscape, offering visitors an immersive experience that resonates with the essence of Buddhism and its teachings.
