Located in Coimbatore, the textile city of Tamil Nadu, Valliappan’s mansion harmoniously integrates traditional Chettinad style with contemporary design, resulting in a property that honours its heritage while embracing modern living.

The customer wished for a warm, inviting atmosphere that felt personal rather than neutral. The aim was to balance the rich traditions of Chettinad architecture with the aesthetics and practicality of a contemporary dwelling.

We began our design approach by immersing ourselves in the client’s lifestyle, ensuring that every decision was purposeful and aesthetically pleasing. The home’s core design is the perfect mix of traditional elements—wooden pillars, meticulous carpentry, and rich Pichwai paintings—with modern accents like sleek finishes and natural materials.

An open-plan layout promotes fluidity and connectedness, maximising natural light while defining functional zones with hand-made cement tiles. Customisation was key to the design, with furnishings crafted to meet the client’s specific requirements. Thoughtfully planned features improve functionality and aesthetics, such as an open entryway wall for connectivity and a flexible kitchen breakfast counter for maximum space utilisation.

The living room centred around a swing, transforms into a peaceful retreat; the mustard-yellow, lime-plastered wall adds warmth and complements the design. Custom furniture, precisely produced by expert artisans, adds originality to any environment. Material selection was critical in creating a tactile and engaging atmosphere, with solid wood, cane, cement tiles, granite, and brass all providing warmth and character to the home.

Cherished antiques, beautiful jars, and recycled artefacts were expertly integrated into the design, retaining cultural relevance. Attention to detail enhances the space, from unique knobs to bespoke curtains and tailored rugs, providing depth and personality.

The Valliappan House is more than just a residential property; it is a highly personal space where tradition and modernity coexist peacefully. Every element contributes to a warm, friendly house that authenticates the client’s life and values.
